The detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Tuesday announced the arrest of four members of a syndicate involved in counterfeiting of stamps and currency.
The accused, Alim Sheikh, Hajera Begum, Mohammad Jahangir Alam Jibon and Masud Rana, were arrested on Monday during several raids at different places in Dhaka and Savar.
The DB has launched a pre-planned drive against the syndicate, said DMP deputy commissioner for media Talebur Rahman in a press conference at DMP media centre on Minto Road.
‘Equipment, used in stamp production, worth Tk 40 lakh was seized during the raids. Besides, we recovered counterfeit stamps valued at approximately Tk 14.76 crore,’ he said.
The operation began with a raid on a printing press located in Fakirapool area where a member of the syndicate, Alim Sheikh, was arrested, said a DMP press release published on Tuesday.
The crackdown expanded following information provided by Alim Sheikh that led DB to conduct raids in several other locations, including printing facilities on Bijoy Sarani, at Mirpur and Savar, the release said.
According to the DMP release, Hajera Begum and Mohammad Jahangir Alam Jibon were arrested in Mirpur’s Madhya Paikpara while another DB team arrested Masud Rana during a drive at Rajfulbaria in Savar.
DMP DC Talebur said that more suspects were believed to be involved with the syndicate. However, he did not specify an exact number of the syndicate members.
A case has been filed under the Special Powers Act against the arrested along with four others named and 15/20 unidentified persons, he said.
‘Proper investigation into the incident and the arrest of the absconding accused are ongoing,’ added the police official.
