Shark fins, foreign currencies seized

Trichy: The directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) and the air intelligence unit (AIU) of customs at Trichy International Airport apprehended two passengers who were attempting to smuggle shark fins and foreign currencies out of the country. The officials confiscated 46.680kg of shark fins and foreign currencies, including Euros and Singapore Dollars, amounting to 6.8 lakh from the two passengers on Wednesday.
Acting on intelligence, DRI and AIU personnel checked the passengers who were scheduled to board an Air India Express flight bound for Singapore on Aug 14. Inspection revealed that one passenger attempted to smuggle the shark fins, while the other had concealed the currency in their luggage.
The export of shark fins is prohibited under the Customs Act, 1962, and the attempt to export foreign currencies without valid documentation, as mandated by the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), led to the seizure of both items under the Customs Act 1962. Further investigations are underway. TNN
