Pune: A thief broke into a private forex exchange office in a commercial complex in Balewadi around 3am on Wednesday and stole a safe containing foreign currency, worth a total of Rs19.53 lakh. However, the thief was unable to carry the safe on his motorcycle and after managing the ride for around 300m, he dumped the booty in the bushes, following which it was all recovered later by the police. The forex trader, Rohit Malusare (40) of Somwar Peth, lodged a police complaint on Wednesday morning. Senior inspector Chandrashekhar Sawant of the Baner police said, “We found the safe containing all the foreign currency notes in an open plot at Yashada Chowk in Balewadi. We recovered all the foreign currency intact in the safe.”“The theft came to light after Malusare went to the office around 9am on Wednesday. He immediately approached us. One team started recording Malusare’s statement to file the FIR, while another team gathered the CCTV footage of Malusare’s office, building, and the roadside commercial establishments,” added Sawant.According to the officer, “A close study of the footage showed a thief reaching the commercial building on his motorcycle. He broke into Malusare’s office and found the safe. He somehow managed to grab the safe and carried it with great difficulty to his motorcycle. The footage shows that the thief had a tough time loading the safe onto the two-wheeler because of its size. Somehow, he started the bike and drove away from the building, which does not have a security guard.Sawant further narrated, “A CCTV camera about 200m away from the building shows the thief carrying the safe on his motorcycle. Another camera just 100m ahead shows him on the bike without the safe. So, we checked the area between the two cameras. We found an open plot and here, we discovered the safe discarded in some bushes.”The officer said the police are now searching for the thief after recovering 100% of the stolen cash.
