Police have recovered Tk 30 million in cash and foreign currency from different countries from two flats owned by a former secretary in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur.
Both homes belong to Shah Kamal, the former senior secretary for the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief. He served as secretary and senior secretary at the ministry from 2015 – 2020.
The substantial amount of cash was recovered during raids on two flats in two buildings in the F Block on Babar Road in the Mohammadpur Thana area on Friday evening, said Obaidur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Media and Public Relations Division.
Kamal was not at home during the operation. He has yet to be arrested over the incident.
The recovered money included nearly Tk 30.1 million in cash and another Tk 1 million in foreign currency. Of the foreign currency, there was about $3,000, 1,320 Malaysian ringgit, 2,969 Saudi riyal, 4,122 Singapore dollars, 1,915 Australian dollars, 35,000 South Korean won and 199 Chinese yuan.
The operation was conducted on the basis of a tip-off, the police spokesman said.
