Police have found Tk 31 million in cash, 85 bhori of gold and large sums of foreign currency while arresting former agriculture minister Abdus Shahid.
On Wednesday, a media statement released by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, or DMP said process is ongoing to file separate cases against Shahid under the Special Powers Act 1974 and the Money Laundering Prevention Act 2012 over the recovered items from his residence in Uttara including gold, cash, and foreign currency.
Shahid, a six-time parliamentarian from the Moulvibazar-4 constituency, was the agriculture minister in the last cabinet of former premier Sheikh Hasina.
According to a DMP statement, Shahid was arrested in his house in Uttara, Sector 10, Road no. 2 in the early hours of Wednesday.
Police recovered Tk 31 million in cash, 1,120 Canadian dollars, 1,100 euros, 5,300 Thai baht, 1,953 US dollars, 500 Mexican dollars, 50 Hong Kong dollars, 3,000 rupees, 3,117 Qatari riyals and gold ornaments and bars weighing 990.50 grams (about 85 bhori) from his house.
Shahid was presented before the court on Wednesday, after police showed him arrested in a case filed at the Uttara West Police Station in connection with a murder during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.
A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate granted him a four-day remand after hearing the 10-day remand plea.
Two other murder cases have also been filed against Shahid at the Uttara West Police Station and Sreemangal Police Station in Moulvibazar district.
